Do Tweens need face moisturiser?
You might be wondering if tweens and young teens need to use a skincare routine at all - particularly if they have been influenced by TikTok 'skinfluencers' and peer pressure into thinking they need it. After all, their skin is not yet exposed to puberty and the harsh effects of pollution or makeup.
You can spend a lot of money quickly on products with tween or teen on the label, but we guarantee they are usually the same formulations as other natural products for adults. And in fact, many contain harsh ingredients like Retinol that are actually harmful to young skin.
Many tweens do not need to start using skincare, but if they do it's best to keep it simple and without complicated ingredients.
Some pre-teen tweens will benefit from a skincare routine, particularly if they have started puberty. But, using the wrong products or overdoing it can harm a young person's delicate skin and cause more problems in the long run.
It can also waste a lot of money on unnecessary face care products. We've seen "tween packs" for $120 - that is ridiculous. Most adults would not even spend that on their skin care.
What skin care do tweens and teenagers need?
A basic skincare routine that consists of three steps: cleansing, possibly moisturising, and sun protection.
For a natural, no-harm, and low-price skin care regime for tweens, we recommend:
1. Cleanse: or
2. Moisturise: Biome's Glow On Face Moisturiser
3. Sunscreen:any SPF that your young one will actually use!
Toner: Tweens and young teens do not need a toner. Toners were invented by the skincare industry to strip the oily petroleum that the moisturiser they sold you leaves behind! "Closing pores" is a marketing fabrication. For a little refreshing spray, tweens can use a (made from the steam as flowers are distilled) that is free from alcohol and other drying and stripping ingredients.
Face mask: Again, face masks can be excessive and damaging, especially if they contain petrochemicals, fragrances and exfoliating microplastics. However, we know that young ones do like to try these products, and an occasional mild face mask can be beneficial for oily skin or skin going through hormonal changes. Packaged clay face masks are unnecessarily expensive and contain extra ingredients that are harmful to the skin. We recommend the inexpensive that you mix with a little water.
